We set off from Sarafovo, Bulgaria, en route to the city of Varna on a cold December day in 2008. The car was loaned to us by a good
Bulgarian friend which was nice. It turned out to be a two seater with an engine the size of a lawnmower's. Squeezing ourselves in we set forth. Passing by the resorts of Pomerie, Nessebar, Sunny
Beach, Sveti Vlas we loaded up the engine and started the ascent along winding roads into the deep forested countryside.
No place to breakdown!
So far so good. This lawnmower is going well.
Topping out at the summit we breathed a sigh of relief and began the descent
through the village of Banya, heading again towards the coast and the holiday centres of Obzor and Byala. Stopping at Byala
we admired the view along the coastline and the white sands of the deserted beaches. Let's hope that this area will not
be over developed as is the case with Sunny Beach.
On we travelled through stunning countryside turning off the highway (E87) into
the village of Bliznatsi, an area popular with the Brits, several who have either had built or purchased houses there. Within
easy reach of Varna and just five kilometers from the nature reserve at Kamchia where the river of the same name meets the
sea it's no wonder that this area is a favourite.
In no time we had arrived in Varna, car running well but soon we would be heading back
at night, freezing cold along the dark remote forested roads. Would we make it? Read on.
